Launchedin 2016 by Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn and based on the Zerocoin protocol, Zcash (ZEC)is a decentralized and open-source privacy-focused cryptocurrency that enablesselective transparency of transactions. Zcash transactions can either betransparent or shielded through a zero-knowledge proof called zk-SNARKs. Thisallows the network to maintain a secure ledger of balances without disclosingthe parties or amounts involved. Instead of publishing spend-authority andtransaction values, the transaction metadata is encrypted and zk-SNARKs areused to prove that nobody is being dishonest.

LikeBitcoin, Zcash transaction data is posted to a public blockchain; but unlikeBitcoin, Zcash ensures your personal and transaction data remain completelyconfidential. Zero-knowledge proofs allow transactions to be verified withoutrevealing the sender, receiver or transaction amount. Selective disclosurefeatures within Zcash allow a user to share some transaction details, forpurposes of compliance or audit. Zcash also allows for transparenttransactions, to accommodate for wallets and exchanges that don’t supportprivate transactions.
